About Enable Leisure and Culture

Enable Leisure and Culture is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to support the well being of Wandsworth Council residents and visitors, to strengthen and enrich the community. They believe everyone can live happier, healthier lives through leisure and cultural activities and their diverse portfolio of parks, public halls, arts, events, sport and Putney School of Art and Design all support this aim.

Founded in 2015 they are a company delivering and managing culture and leisure services with around 350 staff, working on behalf of Wandsworth Council.

As they ready themselves for the coming year, to develop and grow, they are seeking to strengthen their committed Board by an additional two Trustees. They have a busy year ahead, with a submission for another contract term with Wandsworth planned for later in the year.

The Role

The main responsibilities of the Trustee is to ensure Enable Leisure and Culture (‘Enable’) is running well and adhering to the agreed charitable values. You will also ensure that Enable adheres to the law surrounding its charitable status, including agreeing reports and accounts as required in its memorandum of articles document.

  • To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the Executive
  • To support the organisation’s Managing Director and his senior management team – requiring experience of working with senior executive officers, and appreciation of the role of a Trustee of a charity
  • To maintain the good name and values of Enable
  • To ensure the financial stability of Enable and the proper investment of its funds
  • To attend quarterly Board meetings, and to read papers in advance of meetings
  • To ensure that Enable’s governance is effective
  • To keep informed about the activities of the organisation and wider issues which affect its work
  • To identify and handle any conflict of interest in accordance with current policies
  • To ensure that major decisions and board policies are made jointly by the Trustees
  • To participate in other tasks that arise from time to time, appropriate to the role

Person Specification

  • Ability to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a charity trustee
  • A commitment to, and the understanding of, the aims of Enable.
  • Integrity
  • Good, independent judgement and strategic vision
  • Willingness to devote time and effort
  • Effective interpersonal skills with good verbal, written and presentation skills
  • A history of impartiality and the ability to respect confidences
  • An area of expertise relevant to Enable:
    • Commercial/Sales
    • Finance (preferably Charity)
    • Legal (preferably charity experience)
    • Employment
    • Funding/Sponsorship/Marketing
    • Local Government
  • Availability to attend four Board meetings each year, and other meetings as required.
  • Strong links or in-depth knowledge of the borough of Wandsworth
