MAG International

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a global humanitarian and advocacy organisation that finds, removes and destroys landmines, cluster munitions and unexploded bombs from places affected by conflict. MAG also provides education programmes, particularly for children, so people can live, work and play as safely as possible until they clear the land.

Since 1989, MAG has helped over 18 million people in 68 countries rebuild their lives and livelihoods after war. They believe it is unacceptable that millions of people are trapped in danger and poverty for years after wars end. MAG aims to help communities get on with their lives, and get back their futures.

With a headquarters in central Manchester, MAG is registered in England and Wales as a charity and company limited by guarantee. MAG America is MAG’s representative partner organisation in the United States, based in Washington DC. MAG America is a registered 501(c)(3) organisation, with an independent Board of Trustees.

The Role

Responsibility as a member of MAG’s Leadership Team

  • Owning and leading the delivery of MAG’s strategy, its continuing development and measurement.
  • Leading, by example and clear management, MAG’s values, identity and standards.
  • Managing and enabling the delivery of MAG’s programme including the delivery of new work.
  • Investing in external relationships with existing and potential stakeholders.
  • Unlocking and encouraging innovation across MAG.
  • Ensuring and upholding obligations under all legal, statutory and contractual undertakings, which include health, safety and security management.
  • Deputising for the Chief Executive as required.

People capacity development

  • Lead the development and implementation of a long-term capacity and capability strategy to deliver MAG’s Strategic Direction from the point of view of knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a strategy to ensure MAG has a strong complement of staff reflecting the values and diversity of the organisation.
  • Develop and lead a learning and development strategy for MAG staff worldwide which enables them to plan their careers and achieve their full potential.
  • Work with the Head of Human Resources to ensure that MAG is attracting and retaining talented staff.

Organisational Development

  • Lead MAG’s organisational development strategy to ensure strong processes and systems to facilitate learning across programmes and business units and from other organisations both within and beyond the NGO sector.
  • Represent MAG in appropriate sector Quality and Accountability initiatives.
  • Develop and lead a strategy to develop the organisational culture of MAG in line with the Strategic Direction.
  • Develop, lead and influence organisational change management initiatives as appropriate to address the strategic needs of the organisation.

Governance

  • Work with the Board of Trustees of MAG to ensure that they have the capacity and support to deliver their governance role.
  • Work with the Leadership Team to ensure efficient and effective ways of working with the Board.
  • Work within the LT and with the CEO to ensure a high performing LT.
  • Undertake specific projects as required under Board guidance.

Human Resources (HR)

  •  Through the Head of HR ensures that the MAG has strong systems and processes to ensure the efficient, effective, safe and legal recruitment and day-to-day support to staff across MAG.

Health, Safety and Security

  • Ensure that MAG fulfils its duty of care to all staff through appropriate procedure and practice, insurance provision, health and safety measures, medical cover and other initiatives.
  • Work with the Programme Operations Director and the Head of HR to ensure organisational compliance MAG’s global health, safety and security management policy and procedures, and corporate preparedness for emergency programme needs, accidents and critical incidents.

Team Management

  • Provide leadership, direction, management support and development to line reports and take responsibility for a robust and healthy management culture in the reporting line consistent with MAG Values.
  • Ensure that all line reports and their teams comply with appropriate internal and external standards, policies and guidelines.
  • Manage and motivate the team to perform to a high standard, conducting appraisal meetings in line with organisational policy and agree and review progress towards individual targets on a regular basis.
  • Develop and implement the departmental annual business plan ensuring that objectives are achieved and reporting quarterly on progress.

Person Specification

Essential Experience

  • Proven delivery of the design and delivery of complex organisational People Strategy Experience of undertaking a strategic level role within a complex, preferably global, organisation with a track record of high-performance delivery and credibility as a senior
    professional internally and externally.
  • Track record of designing, leading and achieving organisational change.
  • Developed and delivered significant strategic initiatives and projects to budget and within the required timescales and project conditions.
  • Considerable experience of delivering change through people and in the people space as an HR OD generalist with change management experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of current HR policies and practices relevant to the UK charitable sector to enable the appropriate governance of eth HR function Senior external representation, appropriate to the role.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge of current organisational development issues, applied thinking and best practice.
  • Ability to lead, manage, motivate and develop a high performing team.
  • Experience of working at a senior level within a strategic leadership team.
  • Excellent communication, negotiating and facilitation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build executive relationships, both internally and externally with senior stakeholders.
  • A thorough understanding of the institutional implications of working internationally.

Qualifications

Required

  • Appropriate higher education qualification, supplemented by experience. Experience may substitute for qualification.
  • Preferably Fellow of CIPD, but Chartered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • An understanding of the NGO environment and values.
