Gatsby Africa

Are you a Kenyan leader passionate about promoting long-term economic development?  Do you have strategic vision, outstanding stakeholder engagement skills, and senior-level management, communications and policy experience?  Would you relish the challenge of transforming a key sector and contributing to real change that will benefit millions of Kenyans?

Kenya’s forestry sector is central to its economy and its future.  But the country faces a serious wood supply gap that will only get worse due to accelerating population growth and industrialisation.  Gatsby Africa’s Kenya Commercial Forestry Programme (KCFP) is working with stakeholders to enhance the competitiveness of the sector and dependent industries, catalyse innovation, create jobs and raise incomes.

Gatsby Africa is seeking a high-calibre Deputy Director for Policy, Sector Insight and Communications in KCFP. This exciting and strategic role requires a candidate with demonstrable management, communications, relationship-building and influencing skills, plus at least ten years’ professional experience in policy – including direct experience in facilitating change or partnerships among private enterprises, investors, finance institutions and other market actors.  Understanding of market systems and sector development is essential. Experience in commercial forestry is desirable but not essential.

The role will benefit from Gatsby Africa’s freedom and flexibility as a foundation, which gives staff huge scope for innovation, creativity and the use of a range of different partnerships, financial tools and intervention strategies.  The successful candidate will be excited by these possibilities, and passionate about stimulating economic growth that improves livelihoods.

This post is open to Kenyan nationals and people with the right to work in Kenya.  We particularly welcome applications from women. The role offers opportunity for career development and growth: we are looking for candidates with the potential to succeed the Programme Director and take on leadership of KCFP in the medium-term.
