About St Christopher's Fellowship

Founded in 1870, St Christopher’s is a UK charity and leading provider of children’s services that operates across Southern, Eastern and Central England and the Isle of Man.

In 2017, St Christopher’s supported almost 1,000 children and young people, providing residential childcare, fostering services, supported housing, services for runaway children, a children’s secure care home, leaving care services, 16 plus services, consultancy and education.

St Christopher’s is an innovative organisation that places young people at the centre of everything we do.  Our current and evolving range of services is informed by evidence gathered over many years of working closely with the children and young people that we support, and through developing meaningful relationships with them, to support their development, grow their confidence and help them reach their full potential.

The Role

St Christopher’s seeks to appoint two new Board Trustees who have a strong empathy with our mission to create brighter futures for children and young people. Experience, skills and expertise in strategic human resources or education, and both with an interest in children and young people are essential, as well as track record of achieving positive outcomes, combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and its impact.

In addition to attending seven Board meetings annually plus an annual planning day, our Trustees are also encouraged to visit our services, attending engagement events, talking to staff and young people and being supportive of our frontline services.

Person Specification

The Trustee with a background from education will provide oversight for a small specialised school that has been developed at one of the St Christopher’s residential sites.  The experiences of this trustee will also be very important to us as we shape our educational services for the future. Ideally, this Trustee will have previously Chaired a Board of Governors for another school and / or have been or School Governor or Head Teacher and will be very familiar with Ofsted regulations and the operational oversight of a school.

The Trustee with a strategic human resources background will help St Christopher’s to develop our employee brand and make the organisation an even better place for our staff to work. It is only through our people that we can continue to develop brighter futures for the children and young people who we work with, so recruiting, retaining and developing great staff is key to achieving our ambitious goals. This Trustee will clearly need to have a keen interest in children’s care services and may have professional experience outside the sector such as retail, hospitality, logistics or from health and social care.
