  • “The scramble for Lagos” and the urban poor’s fight for their homes
    par Ope Adetayo le 26 janvier 2022 à 1:56

Nigeria’s smallest yet most populous state continues to destroy informal settlements in defiance of the courts. On the night of 8 April 2017, the people of Otodo Gbame went to bed thinking they were safe. The previous year, the Governor of Lagos had promised to destroy this crowded waterfront community, but a November 2016 court ruling had forced the state government to suspend its plans. Otodo Gbame’s 30,000 residents had breathed a sigh of relief at the judgement and believed their homes were secure, at least for the time being. Yet just a few months later, on the morning of The post "The scramble for Lagos" and the urban poor's fight for their homes first appeared on African Arguments.

  • Uganda’s tripling of salaries for STEM teachers delights and divides
    par Edna Namara & Patricia Lindrio le 25 janvier 2022 à 10:13

The pay rise for educators in science-related fields has left arts and humanities teachers feeling spurned. Will students suffer for it? Allen Asimwe, 54, has dedicated more than two decades to teaching geography at a large public high school in southwestern Uganda. Her retirement age, as a public servant entitled to benefits, is just six years away. However, she doubts she will wait that long. “I am determined, I want to quit,” she says, calculating that she could earn more by shifting full time to the salon she opened six years ago to supplement her income. “Given the frustration, I The post Uganda’s tripling of salaries for STEM teachers delights and divides first appeared on African Arguments.

  • The genocide that never was and the rise of fake news in Côte d’Ivoire
    par Jessica Moody le 21 janvier 2022 à 9:53

From anonymous avatars to foreign PR companies, the spread of fake news has become an inescapable part of the political landscape. The small town of M’batto in south-central Côte d’Ivoire knows the dangers of fake news better than most. One day in November 2020, residents there awoke to news that they were at the epicentre of world-changing events. The nation had held a contentious presidential election just days earlier, and now social media was awash with stories of massacres in M’batto. Some said the violence was on the scale of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This news had knock-on effects. Prominent The post The genocide that never was and the rise of fake news in Côte d’Ivoire first appeared on African Arguments.

  • Could two troubled airlines’ pan-African partnership work?
par Eric Tchouamou Njoya le 20 janvier 2022 à 12:57

The potential risks and rewards of the South African Airways and Kenya Airways’ joint vision. There are very few profitable African airlines. Those operating on the continent face particular challenges. The industry has to contend with huge disparities in economic and air transport development. There is also an uneven distribution of international air passenger traffic across regions and within countries; traffic is predominantly centred in a few hubs in North, East and South Africa, and in the large and medium-size cities. Other challenges include high costs of operation, market protectionism as well as safety and security concerns. • Liberia’s scrapping of tuition fees splits opinion
    par Dounard Bondo le 20 janvier 2022 à 10:43

Liberia’s free education policies seem to have alleviated one big problem but exacerbated another. For much of Charles’ time as a school student, his days have followed a familiar routine: Classes in the morning; selling biscuits in the market afternoon and evening. As the third of four children to a single mother in Bong County in Liberia, Charles, 19, has had to earn to support his education. “Even though I am a high school student, I have to work so that I can pay for the things that come with this going to school,” he says. However, that looks set The post Liberia's scrapping of tuition fees splits opinion first appeared on African Arguments.
