Suitcases packed with Oxford HR pink clothing (an official shade!), on Monday 27th July our Managing Director, Hazel, and Founder/Non Executive Director, Michael, travelled to Washington DC for the InsideNGO Annual Conference. This three-day long event is one of the largest gatherings of professionals in the international relief and development NGO community and as a specialist in NGO executive recruitment we were thrilled to be there with 950+ delegates from a member base of 300+ organizations, and numerous exhibitors that share information about the services they can provide to the sector.
InsideNGO aims to strengthen the “inside” operations staff and foster leadership within the NGO sector. Sessions led by expert practioners were split into HR, Finance, Grants, Contracts, IT and Legal functions, and whilst we were not able to attend a large number, some really stood out for us. In particular, Laura Wigglesworth, a Senior Global Recruitment Consultant, discussed international recruiting trends and tools, providing us with helpful insight on how to best harness the ever-changing world of social media.
Hazel & Michael looking pretty in pink, and our colourful stall!
As an exhibitor, Oxford HR was based in the aptly named ‘Exhibit Hall’, where we focused on networking and building connections – meeting old friends and new. We took the opportunity to explain how our service is vital to the success of NGOs, by placing the best, and more importantly, the right people in leadership roles, and we were delighted to receive some great feedback!
Whilst we stayed in a lovely hotel nearby to the conference centre, the main shocker of the event was the poor internet connection – “It’s better in most of Uganda than in Washington DC”, said Hazel, “…and that’s speaking from experience!”
President Obama, we just don’t know how you do it.
