How to write a Statement

GENERAL GUIDANCE

  • It is essential to tailor your statement to the position and employer. It really does not give a good impression if your application for the post of Director of Oxford HR is headed “Sales Director – Alpha Sales.”
  • Keep it succinct (no more than 2 sides of A4) and compelling.
  • Strongly convey why you are interested in the role and how your skills and experience make you suitable for this position.
  • Do not repeat verbatim what is included in your CV.
  • Always provide demonstrable evidence to back up any statements or facts. “At Oxford HR, I was responsible for ensuring that invoices were issued and paid on time.”
  • Check spelling and grammar – a statement showcases your writing ability.
  • Follow business letter protocol e.g Dear Sir… Yours faithfully or Dear Name…Yours sincerely.

Remember, a statement is there to attract and maintain the interest of the employer, and demonstrate how your experience, skills, etc, make you suitable for this specific job.

COMMON ERRORS

  • Poor spelling and grammar.
  • Failure to mention the organisation and role you are applying for.
  • Failure to provide evidence of competencies.
  • Repetition of the CV.

TEMPLATE

  • Introduction: State what post you are applying for and where you saw it advertised.
  • First paragraph: Highlight why you are interested in the post and the organisation.
  • Second paragraph: Relate your skills to the competencies required in the job.
  • Third paragraph: Positive close and goodbye.
