Writing a Successful Covering Letter
General Guidance
We offer you here a number of helpful hints to assist in the writing of your covering letter, which will increase the likelihood of your application succeeding. This is not the definitive guide, but merely acts as a prompt should you need it.
It is advisable to tailor your covering letter to each position and employer. If you are making a number of applications make sure you have the correct company details, address, contact name, etc., for each organisation.
It really does not give a good impression if your application for the post of Director of Oxford HR is headed “Sales Director – Alpha Sales”.
COVERING LETTER
- This is a key part of your application. Keep it succinct and compelling, no more than one page.
- Explain why you think you should be called for an interview, and what excites you about this job and this employer. Try to avoid the "buzz words of the season": "passionate" was big in 2007! For example, if the job description/person specification says that management experience is required, make sure that your CV or letter indicates that you have managed people, where, when, how many, etc. Make sure that your application has the names, dates and duties of all relevant employment and self-employment.
- This is the place to draw attention to the ways in which your skills and experience match the stated requirements of the employer as set out in the person specification. Avoid repeating verbatim what is included in your CV, but do emphasise the highlights and most relevant parts. Please use your covering letter to explain any gaps in your CV or unusual circumstances relating to your application.
- Details of how to contact you (quickly) need to be clear and prominent in your application, as selection processes sometimes move rapidly! If you are about to go on holiday or to work in the field, say so, and tell us how to get in touch.
- You should also let us know whether you will require assistance at interview, etc.
Your applications should also include the following:
- A completed Oxford HR cover sheet (
download),
- A copy of your curriculum vitae or résumé (not to exceed three pages).
